Today, with a bit of pride, we are happy to announce the release of our ZOO 2.4 BETA. As promised we worked hard the last weeks on making ZOO work with Joomla 1.6. And here it is running on both, Joomla 1.5 and 1.6! In this post will shed some light on the new Joomla 1.6 version and take a closer look at the new features.

Ready for Joomla 1.6

We had already plans to make a major overhaul to ZOOs underlying framework with the 2.4 release to increase its flexibility. So it was the perfect time to take it for a test drive with Joomla 1.6. To achieve compatible with both Joomla versions we added a new abstraction layer between Joomla and the ZOO. This makes it possible to have the same ZOO version running on Joomla 1.5 and 1.6. This means all functionalities of ZOO for Joomla 1.5 are also available in ZOO for Joomla 1.6. We have not yet fully embraced all of Joomla 1.6s new capabilities but this new framework will make it possible to take advantage of e.g. Joomlas ACL in a future update.

New Features

Of course we added some cool, new stuff through the framework overhaul. We are most excited about a new event system which allows other components to easily attach themselves to the ZOO. This is awesome for third party developers. It makes it possible to integrate with other third party extensions like e-commerce extensions.

We also make use of it and added one of the most demanded features for the ZOO: A notification system for both comments and submissions! You can now assign who will be notified on new comments and submissions. Users who post comments will also be notified of replies. They can also unsubscribe from those topics.

After each ZOO upgrade, there were still old files from previous ZOO installations lingering in your core ZOO directories. There is a new feature now, that tells you what files are modified or even unknown. It lets you remove those unknown files, to get a clean ZOO installation. But there is a bunch of other new stuff to explore like collapsible categories in the administration UI and a cool new ZOO Quickicon module.

Tools for ZOO

As you already know, our good’old YOOtools will not be converted for Joomla 1.6 as we have already started to work on something brand new here! Currently our YOOtools use Mootools as JavaScript library but as you know we have moved on to jQuery with our Joomla templates and the ZOO extension. This just leaves the tools out which are soon to be replaced by a completely rewritten version that uses the latest jQuery JavaScript library. We are really excited to give you a look at it soon! For the ZOO 2.4 Beta phase it means we will not include the tools as we have used to, because they are incompatible and will be replaced soon. However we expect the new tools to be ready before the ZOO 2.4 goes stable, so stay tuned!

What’s next?

The ZOO 2.4 BETA is exclusively available for members only who purchased the ZOO app bundle. As soon as ZOO 2.4 goes STABLE, it will be released for the public. Members can go straight to the download section in the member area and take ZOO 2.4 BETA for a spin! Be aware that it is a BETA version. It is not intended to be used on a production web site just yet.

We have also updated the ZOO to the Stable 2.3.4 version. It includes quite a few bugfixes and the cool new ZOO Quickicon module.

Please give us your feedback and tell us what you think!

Today we cheerful announce the release of our ZOO 2.2 BETA. As promised this came after a very short development period. This post will mainly focus on the new features and capabilities that come along with using MooTools 1.2. We’ll also look at some of the performance upgrades that are included with the new ZOO 2.2 BETA release.

We have also updated the ZOO to the Stable 2.1.2 version. It includes quite a few bugfixes.

Please give us a feedback and tell us what you think!

MooTools 1.2

The recently released version 1.5.20 Joomla adds support for using MooTools 1.2 as your primary Javascript library. Therefore Joomla now includes a new plugin called “mtupgrade” which will include MooTools version 1.2.4 instead of the old MooTools version 1.1.2. Of course the new MooTools 1.2 is more powerful and flexible and has also a better cross-browser code integration which results in less problems with the Internet Explorer. With ZOO 2.2 we included native Mootools 1.2 implementations of all the ZOO Javascripts!

So how do you benefit from MooTools 1.2 as a user? Simple, the new ZOO 2.2 will work better – across browsers and in general. The included JavaScripts are cleaner, thus smaller and faster. Also many modules and plugins in the Joomlasphere make heavy use of MooTools 1.2 already and therefore the days of conflicts with these are over. The new Warp 5.5 framework already includes native MooTools 1.2 implementations of all the template Javascripts! Further the framework auto-detects if your are using the MooTools upgrade plugin or not and will include the compatible scripts to match your MooTools version. Since the old ZOO wasn’t able to work with MooTools 1.2 just yet, you couldn’t enable the MooTools plugin and our latest templates couldn’t benefit from it. Well, now you can!

For this new ZOO version you’ll need Joomlas “mtupgrade” plugin to be enabled. Since not everybody will be able to do so right away, we’ll keep the old ZOO 2.1.x out there for a while. This will give you time to adjust. We’ll also keep fixing some bugs for the old ZOO 2.1.x, but we strongly suggest, that you upgrade to ZOO 2.2. The next major upgrades will build on ZOO 2.2.

Performance Upgrades

Basically it is this simple: The new ZOO 2.2 will run faster. On some occasions much, much, much faster. Until now, the ZOO wasn’t the greatest workhorse to manage 50.000+ items ;-) . You could sometimes wait quite a while if you had large collections of items and categories. Zoo is now able to handle 50.000+ items and 5.000+ categories efficiently. How did we achieve this? Mostly we refactored quite a few database queries and also, that’s the key: we included more database indexes. Some queries run 10 times faster now. Other improvements include changes to the templates and some of the core code functions. We will continue to glance at performance tweaks in the next updates to come.

What’s next?

The ZOO 2.2 BETA is exclusively available for members only who purchased the ZOO app bundle. As soon as ZOO 2.2 goes STABLE – hopefully next week already – it will be released for the public. Members can go straight to the download section in the member area and take ZOO 2.2 BETA for a spin! Be aware that it is a BETA version. It is not intended to be used on a production web site just yet.

We are already sorting through our todo list for features included with the next ZOO 2.3 release.

Update: Why can’t I download the BETA?

The ZOO 2.0 BETA is exclusively available for members who supported us and the ZOO development by purchasing ZOO 1.0 PRO. We really appreciate their trust in our software. This is why we already re-activated and extended all ZOO memberships till 1. June. This should not be a big surprise because we stated this in our ZOO 2.0 announcement 21 days ago (See headline “We care about our members”). If you want to support us too, just purchase the PRO version and you will have immediately access to the ZOO 2.0 BETA! You will also get the new app bundle. Read more about it in the next paragraph!

What’s the difference between BETA and STABLE and new app bundle?

The BETA version is exclusively available for members and contains 3 apps: the blog, the download archive and the product catalog. The STABLE version will be free and will only contain the blog app. We will also release an app bundle with new sophisticated apps for ZOO 2.0. It will include the download archive and the product catalog but also a lot more new apps. So once the STABLE version is release you can download it for free and start your new blog. At the same time you can purchase the new app bundle. All members who already purchased ZOO 1.0 PRO will get the new app bundle! Basically the app bundle will replace the current ZOO PRO edition.
